The Old Town quarter of Albi is very beautiful to wander around with its stunning cathedral. Toulouse Lautrec Museum is a must for any new visitor who appreciates history and fine architecture.
Albi - UNESCO World Heritage Site
On the banks of the Tarn river in south-west France, the old city of Albi reflects the culmination of a medieval architectural and urban ensemble. Today the Old Bridge (Pont-Vieux), the Saint-Salvi quarter and its church are testimony to its initial development (10th -11th centuries).
Following the Albigensian Crusade against the Cathar heretics (13th century) it became a powerful episcopal city. Built in a unique southern French Gothic style from local brick in characteristic red and orange colours, the lofty fortified Cathedral (late 13th century) dominates the city, demonstrating the power regained by the Roman Catholic clergy.
Alongside the Cathedral is the vast bishop’s Palais de la Berbie, overlooking the river and surrounded by residential quarters that date back to the Middle Ages. The Episcopal City of Albi forms a coherent and homogeneous ensemble of monuments and quarters that has remained largely unchanged over the centuries.

Sainte-Cecile Cathedral
From wherever you are in the countryside overlooking Albi, you can see the imposing world's largest brick building of Sainte-Cecile Cathedral. This cathedral is not only a formidable fortress, but a vigilant guardian of the city which has grown peacefully by its side.
Le Vieil Alby: The Old City
The Old City is one of the largest conservation areas in France. Red bricks reign in Albi adorning many buildings, it gives them their special warm ochre colour which varies in hue with the variations of the daylight.
The Episcopal City has managed to preserve its original, age-old layout, marked by the Pont-vieux, the riverfront fortifications, the palace keep, the flowered terraces and the imposing cathedral.
The Berbie Palace
The Berbie Palace adjoins the cathedral on the north side. Built by the inquisitor bishops at the time for use as military fortress, it bears little resemblance at first sight to a palace.
